This paper, the first in a series of three, comments on the state of traditional Junior Science education, addresses some myths in science education, suggests a rationale for studying Junior Science, and presents some desirable features of a contemporary Junior Science program.

The second paper in the series describes how a constructivist project approach to learning in Junior Science has been used to implement, in the classroom, the features mentioned above.

The final paper in this series reflects on the implementation of the approach to Junior Science education described above and discusses some implications.
